Would-be freeway jumper stabs officer

Tactical…. Dad?

Tactical…. Dad?

If you are anything like me you believe in being prepared. You probably carry a “go-bag”,“Scramble-pack”, “war-bag”, “deploy-kit”…… If you are a Dad there is now an on-the-go diaper bag that is cool looking. Check out this link to Tactical Toddler (http://www.tacticaltoddler.biz/) and look at the diaper bags.... Pretty cool, so I thought I would share. If you end up buying one, tell the owner Jody that I sent you…
If you have any informative docs or vids you would like to share with your fellow TKO peers on this Blog, send them my way and I will post them.
And make sure to check out the "Schedule" tab on my web-site (www.esr-black.com) for upcoming TKO classes. G.H.O.G.H.....

Crazy gun battle!!!!

Officer Down: The Peter Soulis Incident

I have had the opportunity to hear Pete speak twice and was amazed both times. I went to lunch with him and got to talk to him informally.  He is a non-assuming stand-up guy with a true warrior mindset. If you ever have the opportunity to hear him speak, I would highly recommend it.

FBI report - Offciers Killed

Here is a link to the 2010 FBI report:

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/leoka/leoka-2010/officers-feloniously-killed

Two things stood out to me:

1) 38% (21/55) of officers killed were shot within 0-5 feet of the subject
2) of the 38 officers out of a total of 55 killed with a handgun, 18% (7) were killed with their own weapon. This is still way too high, but a increasing improvement from a percentage standpoint.
This reiterates the importance of realistic and effective CQC training....

INC. (Nope… not incorporating:)

INC.  (Nope… not incorporating:)
Hand to hand combat is pretty simple if you break it down. In Tactical Knife Options classes we do scenario training where we introduce the student to a hypothetical situation and then have him/her apply the techniques they have learned. Call it on the spot interpersonal conflict resolution, to the extreme.

On occasion students struggle with deciding how to apply techniques or lack imagination in choosing multiple anatomical targets to access. I have come up with a short acronym that I hope helps to prioritize in this situation.  It can also help post-situation in documenting one’s actions by acting as outline points.
I identify the most immediate threat

·         The knife in the subjects aggressive or attacking hand is the priority threat

o   Deadly weapon/imminent threat of death or SBI
N neutralize the threat

·         What target do you attack, and how do you attack it to take delivery system (arm and hand) out of the equation?

o   Use a line 1 slash attack, forward grip to sever the muscles and tendons in the forearm to “de-fang” the snake; and interrupt the circulatory system by accessing the radial artery.

·         Divided attention: Violence of action will re-direct the subject’s thought process and lead to control.

o   Turn the subject’s mindset from offensive to defensive and re-active.
C control the threat

·         What follow up technique arm-bar, takedown, disengage and create distance) do you do to establish and maintain control over the subject?

o   Attack until the subject is incapacitated or submits and maintain control.

It helps to simplify scenarios into parts. Process the situation sequentially through action prioritizing. We all do this naturally, so honing this skill can only make it smoother, clearer in our minds, and quicker in action.

Training dates-slots still open

*****Two Training Dates*****
The County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC) will be hosting a one day Tactical Knife Options (T.K.O.) certification course Friday – October 26, 2012 (08:00-17:00). This is a basic user course.
The Broomfield Police Department will be hosting a one day Tactical Knife Options (T.K.O.) certification course Friday – November 16, 2012(08:00-17:00). This is a basic level user course.
Please post and share this information and direct all inquiries to Jeff at 303-627-2737/CQCtactics@msn.com.
This one day (POST approved advanced curriculum) course will cover the fundamentals of Tactical Knife Options for the LE Professional. As an Officer / Deputy, you carry several different tools as auxiliary weapons or options in order to effectively deal with different levels of resistance and/or threat. The majority of Officers carry some type of folding knife on them on-duty or off. This class will teach you the capabilities of this second deadly force option and certify you in its use. Special training knives along with active training scenarios will be used to fortify and build your confidence in the edged weapon as an effective tool and secondary deadly force option. This class blends both the cognitive and motor skills while building the officers decision making skills, threat recognition, and awareness.
As a patrol or detentions Officer, the most common deadly weapon you will encounter is an edged weapon. This class will help you better identify the threats associated with edged weapons by expanding your awareness and knowledge of the capabilities of the edged weapon.
Students are asked to register no later than 10 days prior to the course (Oct 16 or Nov 06), and class is limited to sixteen students.Late registrations need to be approved and made directly through Jeff.
Register by calling 303-627-2737 or E-mail to cqctactics@msn.com

Marcus Young's story

Here is a link to a story I've shared with some of you or referenced in classes. It is about a "routine" call Officer Young went on that turned ugly really fast.

Slit Throat

Read story from Ft. Collins:

The Frog syndrome

The Frog:

If you drop a frog in boiling water, it will instinctively jump out. But if you place a frog in a pot of cool water and gradually increase the temperature, the frog won’t notice that the water’s getting hotter. It will sit there until the water boils – and will boil with it.

The fate of the poached frog isn’t so unlike that of some instructors who settle into routine or let small conveniences solidify into large habits – and allow inertia to set in. How does such a thing happen to reasonably intelligent people? How does one lose a sense of the instructor he/she has become? It is the boiling frog syndrome - the slow, invisible creep of compromise and complacency – poses perhaps the greatest challenge to an accurate self-image.

Many things conspire to keep people from seeing their real selves. The human psyche itself shields us from information that might undermine our self-perception. These ego- defense mechanisms protect us emotionally so that we can cope more easily with life. This happens with more frequency if you work or train for a corrosive environment like close quarter combatives.  However, in the process of self-protection, these ego-defense mechanisms hide or discard essential information, such as how others are responding to our behaviors and instruction.

Over time these self-delusions that the unconscious creates become self-perpetuating myths, persisting despite the difficulties they cause.  To be effective as an instructor and to potently transfer knowledge to the student, we must continually educate, train and refine ourselves as instructors. This means training ourselves, researching and being a true life-long learner in the particular skill-area we chose to train.
