Ground Tactics training

A friend of mine is offering high level training in Ground Tactics for both LEOs and civilians. Check out his web-site for more info:

train with an expert

Caution: word of advice…..

If you are thinking about getting a CCW or attending some type of firearms user course or any self-defense course; it would behoove you to research the instructor and/or organization putting it on. Especially right now with everyone in a virtual panic over recent legislation surrounding “gun-control”.

Unfortunately, there are lots of self-proclaimed “experts” out there taking advantage of the surge of people interested in this type of training. Just because someone put himself through an NRA instructor course or attended a class at Front Sight, does not make them fit to teach such a course; much less making them an expert. It’s a start, but just a start.

Don’t be afraid to challenge the instructor and have them speak about their credentials. If he is legitimate, he will have no problem articulating his credentials and supplying you with a CV.

I am a big fan and active member of the NRA as well as a certified NRA pistol instructor and Range Safety Officer. However, I believe that for someone to truly be an effective CCW instructor, they need to have some real-world experience: either law enforcement or military. There is more than just marksmanship and firearms safety involved with carrying a firearm for personal protection.

Ask your potential instructor the following:

·         Is he an NRA instructor or a Law Enforcement (POST) certified instructor?

·         Years of experience teaching firearms usage

·         Years teaching Combatives and tactics

·         Number of students taught

·         What type of students (military, law enforcement, civilians…)

·         Does his class cover legalities, tactics, safety, mind-set, and include live fire?

Remember, carrying a firearm is a right! But with that right, comes enormous responsibility. Carrying a firearm for self-defense a change in life-style and mind-set; Not just something to do because you have a right to.  Research and seek out the best instructors to learn from.  Do not settle for the quick used-car salesman pitch. That’s my two sense….:)

knife fight? ...not really

In this short video from the Ultimate Soldier Challenge show, the Israeli Defense Force is pitted against the US Army in a one-on-one “knife fight” using  “Shock-Knives”.  Despite these operators being elite soldiers with far more training than the average person, watch how fast both would be carved up by the other. That is why there is no such thing as a “knife Fight”.  Remember: 100 meters with a rifle…J

Inattentional blindness for a simulated real-world assault

In the Tactical Knife Options class w talk about "Perceptual Blindness" and what a person physically is able to see under Combat Stress.  Perceptual Blindness is also known as Inattentional blindness.  Here is a good article on the subject:

Freedom of Speech: a thought

Freedom of Speech and other Rights:

What happens when a right conflicts with a moral belief/code? One of the problems with all of our rights that we have in America is that people often think they have to exercise them ALL of the time. Though we have the right to free speech; how often is what’s said of any actual value? Sometimes silence enjoyed is better than insisting on cramming what you want to say down other’s throats.

·         Does what I want to say need to be said?

·         Does it need to be said right now?

·         Does it need to be said by me?

What is missing in our Country is a “Moral Standard by which we should guide the exercise of these rights.” Even back during the ratification of our Constitution Thomas Jefferson realized the unprecedented freedoms the citizens had been handed. He said, “The success of America will depend upon the morality of the people”. Our individual moral code supersedes any rights we may have.  Without that moral code, our rights are inconsequential.

3 lessons learned from a surprise knife attack

Edged weapons and other potentially lethal implements can easily be concealed in cupped hands that may appear innocuous from the front

"Three important lessons about suspect control were driven home for a Nashville officer — with knife slashes to his face, neck, and back. The attack occurred as P.O. II John Timm and his zone partner Ofcr. Mike Hunnicutt of the Metropolitan Nashville PD were attempting to resolve a domestic conflict..." To read the entire article, follow the link:

Duty to train

THE DUTY TO TRAIN OFFICERS IS UNAFFECTED
BY THE LACK OF REIMBURSEMENT SOURCES

Recently our office has been contacted by a large number of clients inquiring
as to whether their duty to train peace officers was mitigated by the lack of
reimbursement by P.O.S.T or similar agency. The answer to this question is
a resounding no. The lack of funding from outside sources does not, in any
way, relieve a department of its obligation to train its officers.
The United States Supreme Court has held, “inadequate police training may
form the basis for a civil rights claim against the city where the failure to
train amounts to deliberate indifference to the rights of persons the police
are likely to encounter....The focus must be on the adequacy of a training
program in relation to the duties the officers are expected to perform and
the identified deficiency, in a city’s training program....1

The decision to eliminate training programs or reduce the amount of
training, based upon the lack of reimbursement sources, would most
likely be viewed, by a court, as deliberate indifference to the rights
of others. (Emphasis added)

Take for example, Davis v. Mason County, 927 F.2d 1473 (9th Cir. 1991).
This case involved a Sheriff and several deputies being found liable for civil
rights violations arising out of traffic stops which resulted in arrests,
beatings and false charges being filed against the motorists. The
inadequacy of the training program, which represented the county’s official
policy, constituted a deliberate indifference to the rights of others, as a
matter of law. In sum, your duty to provide training for peace officers is
not, in any way, mitigated by the lack of funds to reimburse your
department for such training.

Who Dares Wins....

On Living:

We are all going to end up the same in the end: dead. How we live is all that truly matters, and the legacy of the lives we lived is all that we, both, leave behind and take with us.”

…recognizing this ultimate reality, the only thing that we should truly be afraid of is bringing dishonor to ourselves, our families and our friends. We must live honestly, with integrity, and with a strong personal moral code.” And I would add live daringly! Push past self-perceived limits and strive to grow daily.

Each day is a gift. What we do with it is up to us. Bruce Lee said: “To hell with circumstances! I create my own opportunities!” That is daring…J That type of perspective is what legacies are all about.

Philosopher Richard Bach stated: “it is always easy to choose a traditional and safe life…” But warriors prefer to live daringly. The SAS has a motto that claims “Who Dares Wins”. So true.

A Warrior's confidence

A note on Confidence and the Warrior:

I am re-reading one of my all-time favorite books and would like to share some of the insight proffered by the Authors:

Empowerment: Many folks seek out quick fix “empowerment” tools to help them make decisions in life. There are no shortage of TV shows, CDs, DVD, programs out there to help one feel; empowered.  However, “if you have to feel empowered to do the tough thing, the brave thing, then you are never going to be someone who does the brave thing when necessary.”

Confidence and Courage related to Discipline: Discipline can be and needs to be a constant in your life, whereas courage can never be. Discipline will get you through the times when your courage fails. You do not have to have confidence to enter a fight (physical or otherwise). However, you must have the discipline to enter the fight and fight your hardest, all the way to the end.

Discipline in Training: Warrior train and push themselves past self-perceived limits all the time; not just when they feel good and the weather is perfect. “That is what true Warriors have; true confidence. Confidence (derived from steadfast discipline) that is born of experiences that have taught them that no matter how scared they may be – however unsure of themselves - to trust and follow their training.”
