Knife Fight

There is a new show on the History channel tonight at 16:0 hours.
It is called the Ultimate Soldier Challenge.  In this episode, two professional soldiers (82nd Airborne and Israeli Defense Team) fight with “Shock Knives”.

Despite these guys being elite soldiers, the “fights” are over within seconds with both combatants suffering numerous wounds.  This is a great force-on-force drill that demonstrates the dangers of a knife in CQC and why we don’t train to engage someone with a knife…

Sudden vehicle stop attacks

New! Force Science seeks answers to sudden vehicle stop attacks
Field research on a groundbreaking new study on vehicle stop safety has been completed by the Force Science Institute, with specific pointers on how officers can better protect themselves from sudden shooting attacks expected by the end of summer.
Using 94 officers from 17 agencies, the research team conducted a series of test scenarios across a 5-day period earlier this month, seeking to determine:
 • exactly how officers spontaneously react when confronted with an unexpected threat to life
 • how their impulsive responses compare to their training and to their personal performance expectations
 • how memory is affected after a sudden high-stress confrontation and how it might be better investigated
 • what might best discourage an assault and what is likely to be the most efficient and safest response if a potentially deadly attack does occur.

***************************************************************************
Update:

I just got off the phone with a Sergeant from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office., precinct 4 which handled the case.

He told me the following:

·         The “Witness/victim” was approx  50 yoa

·         The suspect (guy who was stabbed) was approx. 21 yoa

·         Knife used was a Gerber folding knife with a straight edge; 5.5 inch blade. (In Texas the legal blade length for a conceal carry knife is 5.5 or less blade length)

·         The witness/victim confronted the suspect who had broken into and was in the victim’s veh.

·         Suspect began to “kick the crap out of” the victim. The fight spilled out onto the ground. (victim “looked pretty rough” from the crime scene photos.

·         The victim, while be pummeled about the head and shoulders, was able to deploy his folding knife.

·         Victim reached around the suspect who was on top of him and stabbed him, single handed,  one time in the mid-upper back.

·         Suspect suffered a collapsed left-side lung.

·         Another suspect came over and pistol-whipped the victim.

·         Several other Good Samaritans came over and subdued the two suspects.

·         No shots fired

·         No charges for the witness/victim

In the Sergeants words, “good job for the victim”.   If I can find out any further, I will post

The Effect of Physical Exertion on Witness Memory

Another great article from ForceScience:

Abstract:
"Understanding memory performance under different operational conditions is critical in many
occupational settings. To examine the effect of physical exertion on memory for a witnessed
event, we placed two groups of law-enforcement officers in a live, occupationally relevant
scenario."

Do egos hold your training back?

If you have been a Combatives trainer for any period of time, you will appreciate this article.  Combatives trainers/instructors are, and have to be different than the typical trainer.  The old adage “those who can’t; teach” ,that is commonly associated with teachers, simply does not apply in Combatives instruction.  As an instructor, you have to have deep-depth knowledge and skill in order to understand, demonstrate and facilitate the transfer of knowledge. Simply, you must instill confidence by emanating confidence.

I want to share this article for you instructors out there…J

Group “A” of Group “B”?

Group “A” of Group “B”?    Which one are you?

Group “B” folks, which are the majority, tend to wait for opportunity. They sit in their comfort zone, sipping coffee and passively wait for opportunity to come pleasantly knocking on the door. Group “B” folks expect opportunity to come to them and let circumstances dictate their lives. Words like “passive” and “complacent” are often associated with group “B”. They don’t want to offend anyone or upset-the waters/norm. They watch life pass them by and wonder why great opportunities never show up at the doorstep.

Group “A” folks are the reason great opportunities never show up at the doorstep. Group “A” folks get up pre-dawn, grab their war-bag and go out hunting opportunity despite any ambient circumstances. They track it down, throw a rope around its neck, and make it serve them. Group “A” folks dictate and create their opportunities despite, and often times in lieu of circumstances. You can spot a group “A” person, because they wake up with a purpose and go to bed satisfied that they accomplished something and developed as a person each and every day.  That is why “great opportunities” never show up at the doorstep of group “B” folks; it was being wrestled down and optimized by a group “A” person.

So, which one are you?  Which group do you strive for?  There is an opportunity out there somewhere waiting for you to track it down and take it.

Effective Cognitive Processing in Law Enforcement

The Mental Edge: Effective Cognitive Processing in Law Enforcement:

"The enhanced operational tempo of modern law enforcement requires a modern edge. Under tactical conditions, officers and commanders can expect to revert to their training, to their most ingrained habits and patterns of behavior. These patterns can be optimized for survival and success through cognitive-based training. Such training provides prior frameworks for understanding, is explicit, is initially feature-intensive in nature, and gives rise to practice that results in smooth series of responses to the reasonable spectrum of tactical possibilities which may confront modern law enforcement agencies…"

Police TASER knife-wielding man

remember.... a TASER against a person armed with a knife is a BAD idea!!! Unless, you have a deadly force back-up option on ready...

Glad this one worked out okay, but remember about re-action times, distances, and the lethality of a knife.
