Title: Outstanding Class
From start to finish this class was unlike any other instructional course I have ever attended. Jeff Black is truly an exceptional instructor. He brings with him a resume full of real world experience and combines it with a very well though out and constructed curriculum. He does an excellent job of covering a wide range of topics as well as integrating practical drills in a short period of time. I would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in self defense. It far exceeded my expectations and I am extremely glad that I had the opportunity to attend.

Title: Highly recommended!
Tactical Knife Options is an informative, practical and eye-opening class. The instructor, Jeff, is extremely qualified and presents with energy, punctuated with humor. The information presented far exceeded my expectations. Saying I am a knife novice would be overly generous, so I learned a great deal. Most interesting and surprising were the statistics and demonstrations Jeff presents. Topics encompass legality, action/reaction times, motor skills, combat mindset, lines of attack and much more. The class is a good, balanced mix of classroom and practical drills. I highly recommend it.

Master the basics....

Really good article.  Talks about several important things:
- Combatives training incorporates firearms, edged weapons, arrest control, and ground tactics.     These are not separate topics, but all fall under the UOF umbrella.
- Simple and realistic is the way to go
- In combat what comes out is what you put in during training

The Influence of Officer Positioning on Movement During a Threatening Traffic Stop Scenario

From Force Science:
Intro:
Conducting traffic stops is a routine patrol duty of police officers. The most frequent and visible interactions between police officers and the public take place in motor vehicles, most commonly at roadside traffic stops (Eith & Durose, 2011; Harris, 1989; Pinizzotto, Davis, & Miller, 2008). Officers successfully complete the majority of “routine” traffic stops without facing the threat of injury; however, traffic stops can place officers at risk of injury or death either by intended or unintended actions by an assailant or others (Payton, 1964). According to the California Commission on Peace Offi- cer Standards and Training (2005), traffic stops “can be one of the most dangerous duties a patrol officer can perform” (p. 1-3).

Ecellence Vs. Perfection

From the W.I.N. ing mindset newsletter:
www.winningmindtraining.com

Here are two choices for living your life:

1.            Strive to be the best that you can be in your life and your pursuits. Make a commitment to always be better tomorrow than today. Accept that failure is part of life and is an opportunity to
find a better way of doing things. Accept that the pursuit of excellence is a life long exciting journey of continual improvement and constant positive change. Pursue your dreams and your passions.

2.            Seek a goal that is impossible to achieve. Accept that whatever you do it will never be good enough. Live in fear of making a mistake or failing.

Applying the W.I.N. Philosophy which would you choose?  Option 1 is the pursuit of personal excellence we have spoken about often in these newsletters. Option 2 is striving for perfection. Perfection, in my opinion, is impossible to achieve. Therefore, it creates in many people a hesitancy to act out of a fear of failure.  I imagine all of you chose Option 1.

Here is an excerpt on the topic of Excellence vs. Perfection from Lou Tice of the Pacific Institute:  "Are you a perfectionist? Do you know anyone who is? Today, I want to talk about the drive to be perfect and what it can cost you.

What's so bad about being good?  Nothing at all, but trying to be perfect can cost you a lot in terms of mental health and harmonious relationships. You see, people who can mobilize themselves in the
face of tough problems are usually folks who don't worry about being perfect. They're happy to move ahead with a partial solution, trusting that they'll invent the rest as they go along.

Now, perfectionists will try to tell you that their relentless standards drive them to levels of productivity and excellence that they couldn't otherwise attain. But often just the opposite is true. Perfectionists usually accomplish less, because they waste so much time paralyzed by fear of failure. They won't start anything until they know how to finish it without any mishaps, and that's a mistake.

Even though they don't know exactly how they're going to do something, high-performance people keep their vision of the end-result uppermost in their minds and forge ahead anyway. They believe that they'll get the help they need, find the resources they need, and figure out the how-to's as they go - and they usually do.

If, for some reason, they don't achieve the outcome they wanted, they don't waste energy beating themselves up about it. They simply learn from the experience and move on. "

This week's challenge is to step back and take a look at your life. Which of these options have you chosen?  Actually there is a third option. That is to be an ostrich and think like a victim, accept
mediocrity in your life and make excuses for your situation, your decisions and your life. I am assuming that if you have been reading this newsletter for well over a year that this is not
acceptable to you so I did not list it at the start of the newsletter.

Detective disarmed; shot with own gun...

Sadly, this story serves as an example of a weapons retention scenario gone horribly wrong.

ANY time  suspect (or anyone) goes for an officer's weapon, it is an immanent deadly threat and should be controlled with immediate deadly force. In this case, the Detective was overpowered. Reading between the lines, I believe he attempted to use open-hand techniques which ultimately proved inadequate.  A duty-knife could have proved invaluable and effective in neutralizing the deadly threat named Powell....

“The suspect, Jeremy Powell, was not handcuffed during questioning at the Jackson Police Department on Thursday. Powell overpowered Det. Eric Smith and took his gun, shooting the veteran detective four times…”

The five hour Duty Knife version of the TKO class is derived from the full day certification course: This one day (POST approved advanced curriculum) course will cover the fundamentals of Tactical Knife Options for the LE Professional.  As an Officer / Deputy, you carry several different tools as auxiliary weapons or options in order to effectively deal with different levels of resistance and/or threat.  The majority of Officers carry some type of folding knife on them on-duty or off.  This class will teach you the capabilities of this second deadly force option and certify you in its use.  Special training knives along with active training scenarios will be used to fortify and build your confidence in the edged weapon as an effective tool and secondary deadly force option. This class blends both the cognitive and motor skills while building the officers decision making skills, threat recognition, and awareness.
As a patrol or detentions Officer, the most common deadly weapon you will encounter is an edged weapon.  This class will help you better identify the threats associated with edged weapons by expanding your awareness and knowledge of the capabilities of the edged weapon.

Students are asked to register no later than 10 days prior to the course class is limited to sixteen students.  Late registrations need to be approved and made directly through Jeff.

Knife Tactics -civilian

Reminder:  My next Civilian-Tactical Knife Options course is on April 19 from 17:00-21:00; hosted by the Centennial GunStore. It is much more than a knife tactics course. It is a comprehensive self-defense seminar that among physical techniques, covers legalities of deadly force situations, re-action time dynamics, crisis/fear induced stress impacts, and much more.
