Detective disarmed; shot with own gun...

Sadly, this story serves as an example of a weapons retention scenario gone horribly wrong.

ANY time  suspect (or anyone) goes for an officer's weapon, it is an immanent deadly threat and should be controlled with immediate deadly force. In this case, the Detective was overpowered. Reading between the lines, I believe he attempted to use open-hand techniques which ultimately proved inadequate.  A duty-knife could have proved invaluable and effective in neutralizing the deadly threat named Powell....

“The suspect, Jeremy Powell, was not handcuffed during questioning at the Jackson Police Department on Thursday. Powell overpowered Det. Eric Smith and took his gun, shooting the veteran detective four times…”
