Freedom of Speech and other Rights:
What happens when a right
conflicts with a moral belief/code? One of the problems with all of our rights
that we have in America is that people often think they have to exercise them ALL of the time. Though we have the
right to free speech; how often is what’s said of any actual value? Sometimes silence enjoyed is better
than insisting on cramming what you want
to say down other’s throats.
·
Does what I want to say need to be said?
·
Does it need to be said right now?
·
Does it need to be said by me?
What is missing in our Country is a “Moral Standard by which we should guide the exercise of these rights.”
Even back during the ratification of our Constitution Thomas Jefferson realized
the unprecedented freedoms the citizens had been handed. He said, “The success of America will depend upon the
morality of the people”. Our individual moral code supersedes any rights we
may have. Without that moral code, our
rights are inconsequential.
