Recent News stories with Officers being stabbed

Here are four recent News stories involving Officers being stabbed.
Note: All of the Officers survived! And in all cases the stabber/bad-guy was taken into custody.  The mind navigates the body:

Things to think about: Re-action time and distances.... In all four instances deadly force by the officers would have been justified. But things erupt very quickly...

Fight Conditioning

In class we talk about "Combat Conditioning" and "Combat Fitness"

Combat fitness is “the ability to perform in a combatively effective manner under conditions of extreme physical and mental stress”.

Combat Conditioning, which is “training that prepares the body/mind to perform at optimal levels of combative efficiency under less than optimal conditions”.

Here is Tony Blauer talking about fitness and training....

"A fight that lasts three to five minutes isn’t a fight; that’s more like a round in a UFC match. Real street confrontations are over in ten or fifteen seconds, and that’s important to know because if you don’t really understand how to analyze the confrontation, you can’t prepare for it as effectively. Someone who thinks the fight is going to last for five minutes will train using some sort of sport training where they pace themselves for five minutes, clinch, rest, and so on. Real confrontations are sudden and violent. A person training with a sport mindset can be overwhelmed by that sudden extremely violent close-quarter fight. Understanding exactly what goes on, from timeline to psychodynamics, from the pre-contact phase to the moment of collision helps you define and design a training program."

re-post??? It was just a knife...

Not sure if I already posted this here...:)

Excerpt from article:  FORCE SCIENCE NEWS: Transmission #194

"It was just a knife and the officer had a gun. Why didn't the officer just disarm the subject?""Some people think an individual armed with a knife is not a dangerous threat to an officer," Lewinski says. "From our research and the research of others, we know that not to be true. Knives can actually be more dangerous than a gun....Force Science studies show that "a young person in reasonably good shape can cover as much as 31 feet in the time it takes an officer to draw his gun, point, and fire 1 round. If a person is 7 feet away, the officer could even have his gun in the low-ready position, and by the time he raises the gun and fires even once, he could be stabbed. "A stab from a knife or a stab and upward cut can be extremely quick. Each cut or slash can occur at less than one-quarter second, and any one could be lethal for the officer....""Why not shoot the gun or knife out of their hand? Why not shoot to wound the subject? "Lewinski recalls TV and movie westerns in which the hero defeats an attacker with this kind of precision shooting. "It's one of those Hollywood myths," he says. "It looks good on film but doesn't work in the real world. Officers do not have the ability to fire and hit that accurately in a dynamic encounter." Even if officers aim for center mass, they "tend not to be as accurate as they might be on the range because the dynamics by which people move in a real-world encounter are such that center mass is a constantly changing target...."To stop the threat, the goal of police deadly force, "the best place an officer can aim for is center mass," Lewinski explains. "Even then it's not a guarantee," but it's more realistic than the extraordinary challenge of intentionally hitting only an arm or a leg

more on "Looming"; Force Science

Looming question : [In FSN #218 (12/7/12), Dr. Bill Lewinski, executive director of the Force Science Institute, and Force Science instructor Chris Lawrence discussed the perceptual phenomenon called "Looming," which makes vehicles driving directly toward you appear to be larger and moving faster than is actually the case. In response, a psychologist asks:]
Does the same perceptual phenomenon occur in a rapidly approaching human?
Dr. H. Anthony
Wyndmoor, PA
Chris Lawrence replies:
I have talked about this with Dr. Alexis Artwohl, also a Force Science instructor. Our discussion fit the research on Looming in that it is believed to be part of our evolutionary survival mechanisms, designed to get us moving quickly from the path of approaching danger, such as a large animal bearing down to attack.
The size of the approaching object is a factor. The larger the object, the greater the impact on your visual field. A 250 lb. man can be two feet wide at the shoulders, where an approaching car can be six feet across. While the visual image of an approaching person will expand in a manner similar to the approaching car, the size of the image of a person will not cover as much of the viewer's retina as a vehicle, given the same distance away from the viewer.
Also, we become habituated to other people approaching us head-on, as on a crowded sidewalk or while walking through an airport terminal. However, change the context of the approaching person from mundane to menacing and the experience of the viewer may be very different than that of a witness viewing the event from a different perspective. Looming may also contribute to the startle response as you suddenly realize a large object is in front of you as you round a blind corner, for example. Unexpectedly your visual field is filled with an object you didn't expect.?
Researchers in London have documented that the Looming phenomenon is directly affected by the perception of threat. Viewers watching threatening objects coming toward them interpret the objects as being closer and moving faster than nonthreatening stimuli.
As the scientists report in the journal Current Biology, "[E]motion modulates some basic aspects of perception." For instance, people who fear heights tend to experience a "distorted perception of vertical distance," while those who are claustrophobic tend to misjudge the amount of space immediately surrounding them.
To access the full report of how Looming is affected by a perception of threat… (read more at the link):

Perspective

A friend of mine posted this on FB.  I thought I would share it...:)

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles roll
ed into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

...
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’

The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed..

‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—-your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—-and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.. The sand is everything else—-the small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and mow the lawn.

Take care of the golf balls first—-the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented. The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’ The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.

Six stabbed at northeast Atlanta New Year's party

Posted: Jan 01, 2013 3:53 AM MSTUpdated: Jan 01, 2013 8:52 AM MST
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) - A man kicked out of a New Year's Eve party early Tuesday has been arrested after going on a stabbing rampage.
Officers said Luke Odonodan, 19, and Andrew Mainor were involved in an altercation and Odonodan was asked to leave the home on Gibson Street.
Odonodan returned around 3:30 a.m. with what appeared to be a knife and stabbed Mainor.
Others tried to subdue Odonodan, at which time he began stabbing all of them.
A woman called 911 as she attempted to drive several victims of the stabbing to an area hospital.
Two people sustained stab wounds to the abdominal and leg areas which left both semi-conscious at the time.
During the scuffle, Odonodan was cut on his lower back.
All together, three victims were taken to Atlanta Medical Center, one of which was in critical but stable condition. A fourth was taken to Emory University Hospital Midtown. There were a total of six people injured.
Odonodan was charged with five counts of aggravated assault while at the hospital.
