Training Announcement - Duty Knife

If you would like a flyer, e-mail me directly:

Training:
A study completed in 2010 showed that 97% of patrol officers in Colorado carry one or more knives as part of their daily uniform/tool-box while on duty.
Do your officers? Have they ever received “User- training”with the Duty-knife? They receive training with every other weapon (lethal or less-lethal) that they carry. Training builds skill, confidence and awareness; which in turn reduces liability.
The Broomfield Police Department is hosting the Tactical Knife Options-Duty Knife class on July 19th from 12:00 – 17:00. The tuition cost for the class is $70.00. Please see the attached flyer for more information.
If you have any questions or would like more information than is included on the flyer, please contact the Instructor at cqctactics@msn.com or 303-627-2737.

Video: Philly police shoot, kill stabbing suspect

Pretty good video, albeit a little grainy/choppy: I like that there was minimal re-action time by the officer who fired. He quickly and efficiently Identified/Prioritized the imminent deadly threat, Neutralized it, and Controlled it...(INC).
"The suspect, who was no stranger to trouble, got into a fist fight, then stabbed a man before police arrived and ended the violence..."

To view the video, follow the link:

Knife = Deadly Threat = Deadly Force

A knife is a deadly weapon and equals a deadly threat. A TASER is not an appropriate response as it is a lower level to attempt control. The only time a TASER is appropriate is if it is accompanied by a Deadly Force option at the ready...

On Facebook

For those of you who have asked; my company can be found on FB under
"Emergency Survival Responses". I am trying to keep up with the times so poke-it, like-it, follow-it, or whatever else one does on FB...:)

New "invisible gorilla" study adds to proof of "inattentional blindness

The Invisible Gorilla.  This is a great example of what happens to a person under combat stress and what we talk about in class with Sensory Gating:

"Additional evidence of the phenomenon known as inattentional blindness has emerged from a new study of sensory focus and memory, this time with a professional group other than cops."

"At Force Science, we write and teach about inattentional blindness in a law enforcement context," says Dr. Bill Lewinski, executive director of the Force Science Institute. "But this behavioral happening is by no means limited to police work--which, in fact, lends credence to its frequent occurrence in use-of-force encounters."

FRESNO -- Authorities say a central California homeowner killed a robbery suspect with a samurai sword during a home invasion.
The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says two suspects armed with a handgun and an axe invaded a house in Firebaugh near Fresno in the middle of the night Saturday intending to rob the home.

The suspects, 34-year-old Aaron Baeza and 30-year-old Christopher Rupe, tied up the homeowner and his girlfriend and demanded money. They later freed the man to allow him to look for the cash.
The homeowner then stabbed and killed Baeza with his samurai sword.

Rupe escaped, remains at large, and is considered armed and dangerous. Investigators say he may be traveling with an unidentified Caucasian woman in a dark green Ford F-150 pickup, with a California license plate of 6T04402.

startle flinch response-picture

In class I describe that happens when there is a sudden threat stimulus/movement towards you. The Limbic system activates and you flinch. Also, the LS tells your body to create distance and/or a barrier (usually your extensors/arms and hands) between you and the incoming threat.

This happens almost instantaneously and is a response or reflex rather than a re-action. Here is a great picture of this happening. In the picture the sudden threat stimulus is a broken baseball bat flying into a crowd:

Ultimate Knife-defense Instruction

This video is awesome. Sadly, the pardoy demonstrates how some real-life "knife-experts" teach.

Excited to now have the Tactical Knife Optioins course POST recognized in Wyoming...:)

Woman stabs intruder to death…

Quick thinking. She has the winning mindset. Trying to shoot the indtruder might not have been tactically wise due to the close quarters and risk of hitting the husband....

“Sgt. Cindi West says the woman's husband was struggling with the man about 1:40 a.m. Monday when she got a knife and stabbed the stranger to help her husband.”

Outstanding read

Another great piece of work by Brian Willis.  This is an amazing book for anyone, but especially for LEO, Military or trainers of either.

Teen stabs detective in eye with pencil

Never assume just because it is a minor "routine" call, or a small female subject, that you don't have to be vigilant and on guard...

“…officers were bringing in two 15-year-old girls to be processed on a warrant and disorderly conduct charges. One of the girls grabbed an eyeliner pencil and stabbed Peter Baglioni, 58, in the eye…”

pearls of wisdom

“there is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.”

Don’t beg, don’t trust, don’t fear…

Excerpt from a fantastic read. E-mail me if you want the title/author….
“…When confronting a committed, powerful enemy or threat, “don’t beg, don’t trust, don’t fear.” When life comes at you hard and cruelly, you may feel compelled to crumble and do these things. You just have to discipline yourself not to. Don’t ever show weakness to an enemy, whether that enemy be a terrorist on a plane, an enemy soldier in combat, a business competitor, a backstabbing co-worker, or an envious and gossiping neighbor or family member. Never beg; never show those people that they have that amount of control over you. And once you’ve identified your enemies, never trust them. Remember, people like that don’t change. Those who are untrustworthy should never be trusted. You don’t have to hate or try to hurt them, simply never allow them to hurt you. Finally, never fear anything in life. (It is okay to have fear, but don’t fear others. Use fear of danger as a tool to fuel, motivate and empower you to overcome). Ultimately, we are all ending up the same: dead. Once you’ve come to grips with that, there is nothing else to be afraid of. “

Muscle memory and reps...How many?

I have read many articles by Hock.  I dont always agree with him, but I beleive he is on-target with this article:

by W. Hock Hochheim
"In Motor Learning, Dr. Schmidt states with a flurry of charts and studies that it requires approximately 300-500 repetitions to develop a new motor pattern. Conversely, once bad or inadequate habits are already in place, he states it takes about 3000-5000 repetitions to erase and correct a bad motor pattern. Layman readers and regurgitators please take note, 300 to 500 repetitions, not thousands. Hundreds. For some reason, many trainers and writers have latched on to a reverse misunderstanding of this study..." for the full article, follow the link: http://www.hockscqc.com/articles/howmanyreps/?index.htm
