startle flinch response-picture

In class I describe that happens when there is a sudden threat stimulus/movement towards you. The Limbic system activates and you flinch. Also, the LS tells your body to create distance and/or a barrier (usually your extensors/arms and hands) between you and the incoming threat.

This happens almost instantaneously and is a response or reflex rather than a re-action. Here is a great picture of this happening. In the picture the sudden threat stimulus is a broken baseball bat flying into a crowd:
