In class we talk about the “Flinch/Wedge” response. The
Flinch portion is a natural reflex-response. Remember that “responses” are faster than “re-actions” because you bypass the reactionary-sequence
which takes approximately 1.5 - 3.0 seconds to complete for the average person.
The Flinch is the initial reflex response to a
threat/movement coming at you. Your brain perceives a threat stimulus / such as
a spontaneous movement towards your face/head. The Limbic system activates and
you will instinctively put your arms/hands (extensors) up and between you and
the perceived threat. This is the mind and body’s attempt to create a barrier
and thus space, between your core and the threat.
